To chat with a strange player privately, hold Alt key and left click on the target player. To chat with your friend, right click on his or her name in the address list. If someone sends you a message, his or her avatar will flicker on the screen.
Group Chat
If you are in the team mode or doing Spacecraft Missions, you will be in the group chat mode.
Offline Message
Need to send a message to your friend, but he is offline? Don't worry. Send an offline message to him and he'll receive it as soon as he gets online.
